Sick Childcare

Have you ever worried what would happen if you had a very important meeting, project, or class to attend, and your child was ill and unable to attend day care or school?

If this situation should ever happen to you, take advantage of MSU’s Sick Child Care program. Designed to support busy parents who are unable to take time off work or school, this service brings qualified home care aids into your home to supervise your child who is ill.

The service gives parents peace of mind and quality care for mildly ill children. Examples of illnesses include ear infections, colds and flu, pneumonia, strep throat, chicken pox, and recovery from minor surgery such as tonsillectomy.

Home Instead Senior Care, a franchised national home care agency, has been contracted by MSU to provide this service. The University subsidizes 70 percent of the cost, and the parent or legal guardian is responsible for the remaining 30 percent.

The cost of care incurred by parents is $5.25 per hour for home aides. Students receive a 10 percent discount which obligates them to pay $4.75 per hour for home aides. If you have more than one child in need of care, the cost is half the hourly rate for each additional child. Each MSU faculty, staff or student is eligible for 16 hours of care per year during the fiscal year of July 1 through June 30.

Service is to be used in three-hour minimum blocks. (Additional hours may be granted with FRC permission.) To arrange for care, it is best to call during business hours (however, you may call 24 hrs. per day). A four-hour notice, is optimal. The sooner you call, the better. On-call staff cannot be guaranteed, but they will do their best to accommodate your needs.

Cancellation Fee: There will be a three hour charge for scheduled visits canceled with less than 12 hours notice. Parents and guardians may call Home Instead 24 hours a day to request care (517-333-0610 or 517-449-4301).

Parents and guardians are encouraged to pre-register with HISC before the care is actually needed. By pre-registering, the intake process is shortened.

Forms to pre-register are available through the Family Resource Center as well as online.
