Commuting

Benefits of carpooling…

  • Save $ on Gas!
  • It’s good for the environment!
  • Networking time!
  • Less parking hassles!
  • Companionship!

The Family Resource Center began a “MSU Commuter’s List” in 2004 to help MSU staff and faculty connect with other campus commuters. It was a successful program as many carpool groups started because of it! CATA (Capital Area Transit Authority) now has a FREE “Clean Commute Options” program that can match MSU employees and community members. Their program finds carpool partners and discusses other options for getting to work while saving resources. CATA has more tools to assist people with commuting options then the FRC has available due to the nature of their business. You may contact CATA’s Clean Commute Program by calling the general telephone number (517) 393-RIDE (7433) or by emailing cleancommute@cata.org. Please visit them on the web.

CATA - Capital Area Transit Authority provides the bus lines for campus and the community as well as a “Clean Commute Options” program. CATA now has three Hybrid buses that offer cleaner air, noise reduction, fuel efficiency, fewer delays, and smoother performance.

Michigan Rideshare - Local Rideshare Offices (LRO) help commuters find vacancies in existing vanpools, or match people who are interested in forming a new carpool or vanpool group.  For more information on MichiVan Commuter Vapools, please contact VPSI at 800-VAN-RIDE or visit their website at www.michivan.com.

Parking for Commuters - To purchase a Car Pool permit all parties in your car pool must come in to the Parking Office with their vehicle registrations. They will issue a validator system faculty/staff permit and the cost of this will be divided equally among the members of your car pool. The cost can not be payroll deducted. So all members of the car pool must come prepared to pay their portion of the permit. There is a limit of four parties for each car pool permit. If you already have a group of participants and you know how many you have, then you may contact me for a price that will be divided among you so that you know ahead of time what amount you will need to pay.

For more information on parking, please contact the Department of Police and Public Safety Parking Office at 517-355-8440.

MSU Bike Project - Check this out for information on getting a 1-year bike lease for personal or general office use to get around campus! The Bike Project also provides bike repair services to the campus community and is responsible for the canoe rental service as well.
